Skype is a messaging service in which we can chat via Text, Video or Audio. Chat via Text and Video is free on Skype which is why Skype is the most popular Video Messaging Service. Chat Via Audio is sometimes chargeable but the charge of the Audio Call is much lower than other services. Microsoft owned Skype long ago but Skype has its free version for Linux and Android operating systems also. In this tutorial, you are going to learn how to install Skype on Linux Mint 19.
Before you start to install Skype on Linux Mint 19. You must have a non-root user account on your desktop with sudo privileges.
Install Skype from the Linux Mint Partner Repository
To install Skype from the Linux Mint partner repository you will need to add a third-party repository first. Then you will need to update the apt package manager index and then finally you are able to install Skype.
Add the Skype repository by typing following in terminal and pressing enter.
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner"
Now you should add i386 architecture on your Linux Mint Desktop. We will use here dpkg package manager to install it.
dpkg --add-architecture i386
To update the apt package manager index enter the following text in terminal and press Enter.
sudo apt update
You have done the necessary work to install Skype. Execute the following command to install Skype.
sudo apt install skype
Confirm installation by typing the following command in the terminal.
Done! Start Skype by typing following in terminal.
We have successfully installed Skype in Linux Mint from partner repository
Install Skype Manually.
To install Skype on Linux Mint manually you should download .deb file. You will need to add i386 architecture to Linux Mint Desktop then we will install the .deb file.
First, we need to download the .deb file for Skype. Type following text in the terminal and hit enter to download
Now you need to add i386 architecture to your Linux Mint Desktop by typing following
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
Update the package manager index by executing the following command
sudo apt update
Install Skype by with dpkg command using downloaded .deb file.
sudo dpkg -i skype-ubuntu-precise_220.127.116.11-1_i386.deb
You will get dependencies error. Now you must install dependencies required to install by typing following.
sudo apt-get -f install
You can start skype by going to activities and searching Skype icon then hitting Enter or you can type the following command.
